Higher load, strong run-flat capability: Michelin releases “genuine” off-road tyre

The X Force ZL allows payloads to increase by some 400 kg per vehicle

Both civilian and military users are considered target customers for the latest Michelin tyre, the off-road, run-flat X Force ZL.

Michelin describes its new product as a “genuine off-road deep tread tyre offering the highest load capacity on the market and specific shoulder protection for small civilian and military all-terrain trucks between 7 and 13 tonnes.” At 3,350 kilogrammes per tyre, load capacity is 775 kilogrammes higher than the previous-generation tyre and, Michelin points out, at least 100 kilogrammes more than any other competitor product. This high load capacity has been achieved through the use of a new casing construction and reinforced crown area. The shoulder/sidewall area is also additionally protected by the presence of a series of 1mm deep trapezoidal blocks that safeguard the tyre without compromising casing flexibility.

The switch to Euro 6 is often accompanied by additional vehicle weight, and the extra armour many military vehicles sport these days also results in a heavier vehicle. Michelin says the X Force ZL addresses growing vehicle weight, with the tyre allowing payloads to increase by some 400 kilogrammes per vehicle without compromising the ability to drive at speeds of up to 110 km/h / 68 mph.

In order to provide mobility in extreme situations, the Michelin X Force ZL also possesses run-flat capabilities and exceeds the military protocol test (finabel Test A20A protocol) requirements, achieving more than four hours of continued mobility over a distance of more than 100 kilometres after being punctured.

Produced in size 335/80R20, the tyre is commercially available from mid-February 2017.
