Hankook Technodome hosts annual Design Insight Forum

The five finalists were displayed at the Hankook Technodome

A ‘Design Insight Forum’ is taking place today at the new Hankook Technodome in South Korea. According to Hankook Tire, the Design Insight Forum is a platform for cultivating future leaders and unveiling “best of the best” cutting-edge concepts.

The event has taken place annually since 2004, and this year’s Design Insight Forum is being held under the banner ‘Connect to the Connected World’ and concentrates on tyre-centred smart mobility, automotive technology trends and tyre technology for future electric vehicles.

Design Innovation is a Hankook Tire sponsor programme run in collaboration with students at renowned university design faculties around the world. This year, the programme was executed together with senior industrial design students at University of Cincinnati in the USA. The students were given the task of suggesting mobility solutions in future mega cities that involve self-driving and connected cars, and car-sharing. Hankook Tire says the winning works have resulted in numerous patents as well as design awards, including IDEA, IF awards and Red Dot Design Awards. Last year, the Boostrac Concept Tire, which was a part of the Design Innovation 2014 project, won a Red Dot Luminary award.

A total of 34 works were submitted for Design Innovation 2016. The five winning works were ‘Flexup’, which enables free movement, even on stairs, ‘Magfloat’, driving with a flexible wheel by use of a magnetic field, ‘Autobine’, an expandable bus to which tyres are added depending on the number of passengers, ‘Shiftrac’, which uses principles seen in skating to enable strong cornering, and ‘i-Play’, which maximises cornering performance. All five were exhibited in mock-ups and animated form at the Hankook Technodome.
