BMW homologates 3 Pirelli tyres for the 7 Series

The latest Pirelli P Zero, which is scheduled for market release in spring 2016, has been approved for the new BMW 7 Series

Pirelli has reported its latest original equipment success. Following on from last month’s news that the Pirelli P Zero and Scorpion Winter will be supplied to the BMW X5 M and X6 M, the tyre maker shares that a number of tyre models and sizes have been approved as OE fitments for the new BMW 7 Series G11/G12.

The P Zero UHP summer tyre has been homologated in the following sizes:

• 245/45 R19 102Y XL

• 245/45 R19 98Y r-f (VA)

• 245/40 R20 99Y XL r-f (VA)

• 275/35 R20 102Y XL r-f (HA)

• 245/35 R21 96Y XL r-f (VA)

• 275/30 R21 98Y XL r-f (HA)

The Cinturato P7 high performance summer tyre in the following sizes:

• 245/50 R18 100Y

• 245/50 R18 100Y r-f

And the Sottozero Serie 3 has been approved in the following sizes:

• 245/45R19 102V XL r-f

• 245/50R18 100H r-f

• 245/50R18 100H

• 225/60R17 99H

The P Zero homologated for the 7 Series, and for several other new BMW models, is the new generation P Zero that will come to market in spring 2016.

Speaking about this latest BMW approval, the technical branch managing director at Pirelli Deutschland, Michael Wendt, commented: “This version of the P Zero, the Cinturato P7 and the Sottozero Serie 3 feature tailor-made patterns that, through close cooperation with BMW’s engineers, have been model-specific geared to the chassis and characteristics of the new BMW 7 Series.”

Pirelli notes that “up to 50 per cent of a car’s desired driving characteristics depend upon the quality of its tyres.” The tyre maker adds that no other accessory product has such a strong influence upon a vehicle’s handling and safety, and for this reason, leading vehicle manufacturers go to great lengths to ensure their products leave the factory on specifically-developed original equipment tyres.

“Customers can easily identify the tailored tyres for each individual BMW Group model with a special star symbol on the tyre’s sidewall,” comments Wendt. Each of these marked products – whether summer or winter profiles – have been precisely developed, tuned, tested and homologated for a particular model’s chassis, driving safety and control systems. This development, testing and approval process can take up to three years.

To date the BMW Group has approved more than 270 Pirelli tyres for original equipment on its vehicles, including for the BMW 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Series, the M3, M5/M6, X1, X3, X5 and X6, Mini Paceman, Countryman and Hatch, Clubman, Convertible and Coupé. These homologations include at least 200 summer patterns and more than 70 winter products.
