Canadian association releases winter tyre report

The association representing Canada’s tyre and rubber sector has released a document addressing many aspects of the winter tyre business. Amongst the issues covered in the 2015 TRAC (Tire and Rubber Association of Canada) Winter Tire Report are statistics on winter tyre use within the country and 2015 winter tyre shipments.

TRAC reports that 65 per cent of Canadian motorists drive on winter tyres, a figure that represents a six per cent year-on-year increase in the January to September 2015 period. Usage rates vary widely from province to province, with just 38 per cent of drivers in British Columbia using winter tyres compared with 100 per cent in Quebec. “Frankly, we were surprised at how many drivers still aren’t using winter tyres given their proven superior capability. Public dialogue and consumer education are clearly needed,” comments TRAC president Glenn Maidment.

The latest TRAC winter tyre shipment statistics show that retailers are anticipating higher consumer demand for winter tyres. Overall, winter tyre shipments into Canada in 2015 increased six per cent compared to 2014, and TRAC reports significant growth in winter tyre shipments to dealers, with a 35 per cent increase in Manitoba, a 25 per cent increase in Ontario, and a 14 per cent increase in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI & Newfoundland. Maidment notes that it is “no coincidence” that winter tyre shipments are up sharply in provinces that have government initiatives in place. “These innovative provincial programs are exerting a strong influence and promise to make our roadways significantly safer. Tyre makers applaud these efforts and will continue to do their part to educate drivers about the importance of using winter tyres.”
