Wireless charging trials to start this year

Highways England has announced plans to commence off-road trials of wireless charging technology embedded into road surfaces.

The trials are the first of their kind and will test how the technology would work on motorways and A-roads. The off-road testing is expected to last for 18 months and, if successful, could be followed by on-road trials.

The research is part of the government’s plan to encourage long-term uptake of ultra-low-emissions vehicles, which are currently limited by range in motorway driving situations.

Highways England chief highways engineer Mike Wilson said, “We’re committed to supporting the growth of ultra-low emissions vehicles on England’s motorways and major A roads.

“Wireless power technology will help to create a more sustainable road network for England and open up new opportunities for businesses that transport goods across the country.”
