London’s Transport Commissioner to speak at FTA Conference

London’s transport commissioner, Sir Peter Hendy CBE, will be making the keynote address at the Freight Transport Association’s (FTA’s) Managing Freight in London Conference in June.

Sponsored by Transport for London (TfL), the event will highlight the challenges transport operators in London face over the next two to three years, examining those challenges in more detail and suggesting possible solutions.

The FTA conference will also consider changes to London’s road space, and focus on the competing needs of cyclists, buses, pedestrians, infrastructure projects.  With the increasing numbers of residents in the capital, London’s road space will be changing in 2015 and beyond, and these issues will be discussed during the event.

London’s transport commissioner, Sir Peter Hendy CBE, said: “It is impossible to underestimate the importance of freight in the Capital as without it London could not function. The Capital’s roads are facing new pressures, with a population set to reach 10 million by 2030 and infrastructure changes to meet the demands of residents and businesses. As we face these changes together we’re pleased to support the FTA as it works with its members and the wider industry to understand and address these challenges.”

The event, with headline sponsor TfL, takes place on Tuesday 2 June at The Kia Oval, home of Surrey County Cricket Club and one of the oldest and most historic stadiums in the world.  The conference is also sponsored by Brigade Electronics and Volvo Trucks.

Managing Freight in London will be chaired by FTA’s new chief executive, David Wells, and other speakers will include the Metropolitan Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, Bikeability, Westminster Council, major logistics companies and customers, as well as industry and FTA policy experts.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Freight operations – untangling regulatory and voluntary requirements in London – (TfL)
  • HGV enforcement in London (Metropolitan Police Commercial Vehicle Unit)
  • Environment panel session – minimising carbon emissions and the impact of the forthcoming Ultra Low Emission Zone on freight operations.
  • Changes to London’s road space – from cycle lanes to new bridges
