Toyo has opened its new joint venture for the manufacture and distribution of parts for railway vehicles in China. Wuxi Toyo Meifeng Rubber Products Manufacturing Co, Ltd (TMW) was established through a business partnership with Wuxi Meifeng Rubber Products Manufacturing Co, Ltd (or Wuxi Rubber), which has strengths in technology and Chinese railway parts sales. Meanwhile Toyo has developed and manufactured air springs and anti-vibration rubber components for the comfort and safety of railway vehicles for over 50 years, supplying these products primarily in Japan.
2014 marks the 80th anniversary of the Nokian Kelirengas winter truck tyre, and the manufacturer has introduced two new sizes of its latest winter TBR model, the Hakkapeliitta Truck D. In addition to the existing size of 315/80R22.5, the sizes 295/80R22.5 and 315/70R22.5 will be available at the end of the summer of 2014.
On 23 June Apollo Vredestein introduced a new generation of all-season tyres – the Vredestein Quatrac 5. In parallel the company also launched the new Snowtrac 5 winter tyre. However, as much as the launch was about these products and the technology associated with them, there was also a heavy emphasis on further communicating the upwardly mobile so-called “brand emotion” the company has work hard to associated with its name during the last two decades. The launch could also be read as suggesting a broadening in the company’s pioneering approach to the development of the winter tyre market in the UK to include a greater role for all-season tyres.
Maxxis held its ground at number nine in the annual Tyres & Accessories ranking of key global tyre industry companies, with its 2013 financial results showing consistency with 2012. The Taiwan based manufacturer reported small increases in sales, from $4.63 billion in 2012 to $4.77 billion in 2014, with net profit remaining at around 14 per cent. Maxxis International managing director Derek McMartin said that the company considers its results “a great achievement” given the continuing volatile market situation.
Cooper has formally announced its plans for a $35.5 million Global Technical Center in Findlay, Ohio, Tire Review reports. Located at the tyre-maker’s headquarters the new tech centre will occupy the same building as the company’s North America Technical Center (NATC). Expected to be operational by the end of the year, the GTC will supplement the tyre-maker’s regional tech centres around the world, including its Asia Technical Center in Kunshan, China, its European Technical Center in Melksham, England, and its NATC, on site.
Hankook has slowed its production in response to amassing a record inventory glut. Seoul’s Yonhap News Agency reports that the manufacturer has 660,000 unsold tyres, or 8.5 per cent of its monthly 7.75 million production capacity. The agency quotes an unnamed Hankook source as saying that the growth in demand expected after March had failed to materialise, leading to the surplus.

Pirelli introduced its latest World Superbike tyres at Misano, helping Tom Sykes to set a new lap record. The Superpole tyre was developed by Pirelli as a qualifying tyre, and Sykes was able to shave more than a tenth of a second off Troy Corser’s 2010 record. He also won both the Superbike races on the new soft blend rear solution with team mate Loris Baz and Italian Marco Melandri crossing the line behind him.
Frances Molloy, a prominent tyre legislation campaigner, has been announced as a speaker at October’s Brityrex International’s TyreTalk seminars. Molloy, who is chief executive of Health@Work and chair of Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust, has been lobbying the UK government to change the law on the sale and fitting of overage tyres following the death of her 18-year old son alongside the driver and another passenger in an accident caused by the blowout of a second-hand 19.5-year old tyre.
London’s largest private minicab firm will fit Michelin tyres to its entire fleet following a three-month test on eight of its vehicles. Addison Lee previously used mid-range tyres on its 4,700 vehicles, which include such models as the Ford Galaxy and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Fleet Manager Rob Daniels explained that the longevity of Michelin-brand tyres had convinced him to make the change.
