One quality most leading tyre makers share is a desire to participate in motorsport. When questioned on their motivation for entering into tyre supply deals for various championships, manufacturers typically reply that motorsport involvement helps in the development of better on-road tyres. This is admittedly important – last month, for example, Tyres & Accessories reported the launch of Pirelli’s first F1 inspired road tyre and Hankook’s latest DTM-influenced UHP product – yet image and brand promotion also plays a key role in any decision to support motorsport.

While once Britain took pride in its Merchant Navy, these days the most important fleets can be found on our roads and motorways.
