Australian Formula Ford Extends Contract with Avon

Date: 8th November 2010 Author: Tyrepress Editors Comments: 0

The Genuine Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship has extended its deal with Avon Tyres, with the brand continuing as the championship’s control tyre supplier for at least the next three years. Avon’s tyres will be distributed and engineered through the season by Gordon Leven Motorsport Tyres, which continues its 15-year involvement supplying Avon rubber to the championship. All tyres will be manufactured at Cooper Tire’s plant in Melksham, England.

“The Avon tyre was selected after an extensive evaluation process because of its durability and consistent results over the life of the tyre,” said Australian Formula Ford Category Manager, Margaret Hardy. Tyre selection was based on performance on track, with durability and consistency of lap times the most important factor and supply and service arrangements also taken into account.

The series will use the Avon ACB10 Formula Ford semi-slick tyre, which is now built in line with current EU legislation on the use of “clean oils” which feature low PAH (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) content. An intensive research and development programme has been completed by Avon in the UK, in conjunction with Gordon Leven Motorsport Tyres in Australia.

“The new semi-slick tyre produces consistent lap times throughout its entire life, which is important at this level,” said Paul Coates, General Manager for Avon Motorsport. “When junior drivers are trying to learn about how to engineer and set up a car, they need consistency from the rubber beneath them, and that’s what we’ve provided.”
