For the forthcoming winter season in Europe, SD-International will present an extensive collection of Zeta branded winter and all-season tyres at what it calls “highly competitive prices”. The latest tyres in the range include the Zeta Active 4S, a high performance asymmetric pattern designed to deliver superior driving comfort on dry, wet and light snow road conditions.
Pirelli’s new rally tyre for snow and ice, which has studs longer than 8mm, will make its first appearance this weekend. Fitted to R5 cars on the Arctic Rally from 15-16 January, the Sottozero Ice WJ debuts at the opening round of the Finnish Rally Championship. Its long titanium-tipped studs are locked into place using Pirelli’s patented vulcanisation process for retention. A new tread pattern design helps the tyre to capitalise on the increased grip supplied by the studs. Pirelli says the new tyre will be available commercially for national championships run in extreme winter conditions, such as those run in the Scandinavian and Baltic regions. It is suitable for R5, R2 and historic rally vehicles.
Winter is the season when Nokian Tyres comes into its own, which is fitting for the world’s northernmost tyre manufacturer, and the company is renewing its comprehensive and versatile range of studded winter tyres. At the beginning of 2021, Nokian is introducing its new flagship products: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10 studded tyre for passenger cars and SUVs. A special new addition to this product family is a dedicated version for electric vehicles and hybrids. For the first time, Nokian Tyres is also introducing a model especially tailored for the Russian market: the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 10p studded tyre.
Giti Tire has launched the GT Radial Maxmiler Ice, its first studdable van and light truck tyre for extreme European winter conditions, in five sizes – 195/70R15C, 185/75R16C, 205/65R16C, 215/65R16C, 235/65R16C. The range covers the majority of mass-market popular vehicles from the Citroen Berlingo and Toyota HiAce through to the Ford Transit and Mercedes Sprinter. Load indices range from 104/102 to 121/119.
Millbrook’s Test World facility in Finland has been selected as the official partner of Traficom, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, to carry out assessments across the studded tyre market. Test World will work with Traficom over a period of three years, beginning this summer.
Studded tyres are just a niche market in the UK, but for anyone requiring automotive footwear that’s raring to go when snow and ice builds up, Pirelli has launched a tyre that may do the trick. Called the Ice Zero 2, the studded tyre is aimed at the high value segment.
Pirelli’s new Ice Zero 2 studded winter tyre has been introduced in an exclusive preview on the roads of the World Skiing Championships at Are, Sweden, an event for which Pirelli is the main sponsor. Pirelli is also equipping the Audi e-tron cars used by the event organisers, and for featured “ice-driving experiences”, with Ice Zero FR and Ice Zero 2 rubber. The Ice Zero 2 is designed to meet the mobility needs of top of the range cars on Nordic and Russian roads. It will be launched officially on the icy roads of Pirelli’s proving ground at Flurheden in Swedish Lapland.
Continental has unveiled its latest tyre technology innovation, ContiFlexStud. The manufacturer calls this a “whole new type of stud that signifies an exciting revolution in the winter driving experience.” A completely new design, ContiFlexStud is said to deliver dramatically reduced road wear, grip on ice, longer-lasting performance over lifetime and less interior stud noise.

The next generation of Nokian Hakkapeliitta studded winter tyres will come to market in time for winter 2017-18. Nokian writes that these new flagship products, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 car tyre and Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV ranges, feature new stud technology.
Pirelli’s Ice Zero studded tyre has been awarded top honours in a dedicated test hosted by one of Sweden’s leading car magazines. The tyre beat eight key rivals from the best-known tyre manufacturers in the industry during a rigorous test that tested every aspect of snow and ice performance. Traction, braking, grip and handling in a variety of snow and ice conditions were assessed during the test, carried out by Swedish car magazine Teknikens Varld.
Bridgestone has announced Swedish NHL hockey star Alexander Steen of St Louis Blues as its Swedish product ambassador at a showcase for the manufacturer’s new studded Noranza 001 winter tyre. The Noranza 001 has been developed to perform on icy surfaces, following intensive customer research before the tyre was manufactured. The event, hosted at The Ice Bra, Stockholm, included a detailed presentation on the Noranza from Bridgestone Sweden’s sales manager Fredrik Adlerstam.
