Cam Systems supports decision not to change MOT system

Government pushes ‘better service’, keeps MOT frequency

The government is aiming to lead garages to make improvements in customer service in “a package of transparency and value-for-money measures” unveiled today by transport secretary Justine Greening. According to a statement released by the department, an evaluation of existing MOT test standards and frequency took account of the views and evidence offered by a wide range of organisations.

IAAF annoyed by lack of MOT details in latest government plans

Despite being the subject of widespread discussion both inside and outside the industry, the much debated MOT proposals are missing from the latest government plans issued as a result of the Road Transport Red Tape Challenge. The lack of further details updating the public and trade of what is happening with the consultation and proposed legislation had particularly annoyed trade bodies such as the IAAF.

MPs from the Transport select committee today heard of the overwhelming opposition to Government plans to reduce the frequency of MOTs. Bill Duffy, co-ordinator of the Pro-MOTe campaign, supported by a range of motoring organisation, road safety campaigners and industry bodies said scrapping annual testing would be "dangerous, expensive and unwanted".

Government claims that reducing MOT frequency will reduce the financial burden on motorists have been undermined by a report which shows that proposals to scrap annual testing will hit both motorists and the UK economy hard. The report by Pro-MOTe – "A cost too far" – includes research that estimates that the average motorist would be more than £57 worse off under a less frequent MOT system than he or she is today.

As of the 1 January 2012 the MoT Test will incorporate a malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) check.
