RMI issues general election policy statement

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) has outlined its policies in a document to coincide with the 2017 general election. “Maintaining the current 3-1-1 MOT testing structure, and implementing a clear three-point strategy to tackle mileage adjustment, are two of the main policies outlined in RMI Policy Statement ahead of the 2017 general election,” said Sue Robinson, director of the RMI.

Earlier this year, the government conducted a consultation proposing the extension of the first MOT test date to four years, a move that the RMI is strongly against due to the safety implications this could have on consumers.

The RMI has also highlighted the need for a clearer strategy to tackle mileage adjustment, including punishing those who offend and monitoring vehicle mileage records more extensively. This is something the RMI has been lobbing on actively for some time now.

Other key areas include:

  • Continued support in seeking a fair trade agreement with the EU after Brexit
  • A commitment on increasing the opportunities for apprentices in the industry
  • Maintaining the current 3-1-1 MOT testing structure
  • For the government to implement a clear three-point strategy to tackle mileage adjustment
  • Creating a level playing field for businesses which will allow their businesses to flourish
  • A clear outline of a clean-air strategy

Robinson continued, “Our proposals outline the RMI’s commitment to pursuing the interests of our members, ensuring they can continue to prosper in a constantly evolving market. We feel these areas are crucial to the continued success of the automotive industry.”
