Pirelli sponsoring Emirates Team New Zealand in America’s Cup

Vehicles that float have little need for tyres, but this hasn’t stopped Pirelli getting its name out on the water

While tyres help Formula One cars to maintain control, on a boat this job falls to the rudder. Therefore, it is fitting that these components on the Emirates Team New Zealand entry in the 2017 America’s Cup 2017 feature Pirelli branding. The ‘long P’ logo on its familiar yellow background is present thanks to a new partnership agreement signed between Pirelli and the two-time America’s Cup winner. The Pirelli logo will also appear on the boat’s hull.

For Pirelli, the presence of its logo on the rudders acts as a metaphor for the tyre. “Just as the tyre, in fact, ensures a vehicle’s performance and control, so does the rudder guarantee the mastery of the vessel. Taking part on this sporting challenge underlines the link between Pirelli, which sponsors 350 motor championships in the world, including F1, and racing, be it on the track, road or sea.”

Marco Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli chief executive officer and executive vice-president, adds: “The sponsorship of the Emirates New Zealand team adds to the already rich portfolio of high profile sporting collaborations which Pirelli, the leader in the prestige segment, has and which has grown ever richer in recent months, even beyond motor competitions, with the goal of strengthening the brand’s positioning at the high end of the market.”

The Americas Cup 2017 will take place in Bermuda between 26 May and 26 June.
