A good day for Metzeler, which supplied its tyres to the entire podiums in Monday’s racing
Ian Hutchinson won the Supersport and Superstock categories on Metzeler’s road legal Metzeler Racetec RR tyres, developed through past road racing seasons. The tyre manufacturer’s products were fitted to the whole podium in both races, but it was Hutchinson’s imperious form that led to victories on his Team Traction Control Came BPT Yamaha YZF-R6 in Supersport and Tyco BMW S1000RR in the Superstock class.
In the day’s opening Supersport 600 race, Hutchinson sped to a gap of over 10 seconds over his great rival, Michael Dunlop on the first lap. Controlling this gap to the end of the four lap race, he took a dominant 14 second victory with a new race record of 01:11:36.808 at an average speed of 126.445mph. Second and third went to fellow Metzeler riders Dean Harrison and James Hillier as Dunlop was excluded from the results due to a technical infringement.
In the Superstock class, designed for production based 1000cc machines, Hutchinson aimed to repeat his earlier strategy, taking 15 seconds out of Dunlop on lap one, before the latter had to pull out with a technical problem.
His opening lap from standing start was 133.098mph, putting him amongst the very fastest Superbike laps ever. At the end of lap two a smooth pit stop from his experienced TAS squad to fill up with fuel and fit a new Metzeler Racetec RR tyre, saw Hutchinson home with a comfortable 32 second lead over Hillier.
Metzeler UK racing manager Jason Griffiths commented: “This has been a fantastic day for Metzeler and of course Hutchy, as he has showed the world yet again what he is capable of. From our very first winter test in Spain, Ian has had great confidence in his Racetec RR tyres and given us excellent feedback, so this is surely a testament to that.
“We’re also extremely pleased to see our other supported riders perform so strongly, especially as Dean Harrison and James Hillier made it a double podium sweep for us.”
